Should I choose SPF 50 sunscreen or go for a tan? Myths and truths

The sun is a source of life and well-being, but prolonged exposure without protection can have serious consequences for skin health.

Many people believe that using sunscreen with a high SPF, such as SPF 50, completely prevents tanning, but this is one of the most common myths.

The truth is that even with SPF 50 sunscreen, the skin still receives some UV radiation and therefore tans, just more gradually and safely. A high protection factor significantly reduces the risk of sunburn, photoaging, and long-term skin damage, without preventing the natural tanning that occurs from sun exposure.

Another widespread myth is that the deeper the tan, the healthier the skin looks. In reality, a tan is a sign of cellular damage and a defense mechanism against ultraviolet radiation. Overexposure can increase the risk of melanoma and other types of skin cancer.

Therefore, choosing a high-SPF sunscreen is a conscious decision to protect your skin, not to limit yourself. If you want to get a safe tan, aim for gradual sun exposure, always with adequate sunscreen coverage, reapplying every two hours, and avoiding the sun during peak hours (11:00–16:00).
